A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood effectively around the body. Without immediate CPR and rapid access to an AED, survival chances decrease quickly.
Cardiac arrest is different from a heart attack, although a heart attack can sometimes trigger a cardiac arrest.
