Each foot contains five metatarsal bones. They are the long bones in the middle of the foot, positioned between the smaller ankle bones and the bones of the toes.
The metatarsals help support body weight and provide a stable platform for standing, walking, running and jumping.
Metatarsal injuries are common in sport and may result from direct impact, twisting or repeated stress. Signs can include pain, bruising, swelling and difficulty placing weight on the foot.
Stop the activity, support the foot and seek medical advice if a fracture is suspected. Do not force the person to walk on the injury.
