The umbilicus is the medical name for the navel, commonly known as the belly button or tummy button.
It is the scar left on the abdomen after the umbilical cord is cut and the remaining tissue heals following birth. Before birth, the umbilical cord connects the developing baby to the placenta, providing oxygen and nutrients and carrying waste products away.
Belly buttons vary naturally in shape and may appear raised, flat or hollow.
