The familiar expression is “laughter is the best medicine.”

Laughter is not a replacement for medical treatment, but it can support wellbeing by reducing tension, encouraging social connection and helping people cope during difficult situations.

A good laugh may briefly affect breathing, heart rate and muscle tension. It can also help people feel more relaxed and connected to others.

During an emergency, however, reassurance must remain calm and appropriate to the person’s needs. Never dismiss pain, fear or serious symptoms with humour.
