Removing an embedded object can cause significant bleeding and further injury. Always leave it in place and stabilise it.

If bleeding is not controlled by direct pressure:

  • Continue to support the object
  • Apply additional padding around it
  • Maintain firm but careful pressure

The use of tourniquets is now recognised in specific circumstances, but they must only be applied by people trained in their use. Tourniquets remain outside the scope of general first aid training for most workplaces.

Call 111 if bleeding is severe, uncontrolled, or the injury is serious.
