….. awaiting medical assistance for those over the age of five, the latest guideline is to immerse their body from the neck down in cold water. The most effective way to do this would ideally be using a bath or similar filled with the coldest water available. However, where this method is unavailable, a combination of the following actions may be used.
Use cool or cold water to wet the person using a shower, hose or other alternative water sources. The use of ice packs applied to armpits, the groin, face, hands and soles of the feet is good practice. Ensure that the ice is not placed directly onto the skin but wrapped first in a towel or plastic bag. Use damp cloths which are repeatedly refreshed with cold water and fan the person continuously.
