…..calls are matched to response categories, questions will be asked that matches the emergency. Answering questions is not delaying the response of the emergency services. Once the initial information has been ascertained, another member of the team will organise the appropriate response.

At that moment, it may feel like an excessive length of time before help arrives. In life-threatening situations, the call handler on the line will offer guidance and support.


In order to receive help from the emergency services, there is a system in place with strict protocols. It involves gathering as much detail as possible (as quickly as possible) to ensure the caller receives a response appropriate to the emergency they are calling about.

Obtaining accurate information also informs those attending the emergency, allowing them to prepare for the situation they will enter and ensure their safety. When requesting help, the caller is often desperate for assistance. Staying calm, remaining clear and concise will significantly assist the process allowing it to proceed promptly. The emergency services often face additional challenges such as traffic congestion en route to a call and responsibility to ensure their own and others safety.
