Face masks come in a variety of styles. A face shield is a plastic sheet with a mouthpiece containing a non-return valve. A face mask (pictured below) is a sturdy shaped mask with a breathing tube. The mask fits over a person’s nose and mouth.

The person providing the rescue breaths kneels at the head of the person not breathing normally using both hands the mask is held in place to create a seal and hold the airway open. The narrow end of the mask fits over the nose.

The breaths are delivered by blowing through the mouthpiece attached to the mask. The strength of the breath should be such that causes the chest to rise. Between breaths, remove your mouth from the mouthpiece and turn your head looking towards the feet.
