Pad placement is important. The diagram below shows the positioning of the pads on a child/infant where no paediatric pads are available.

In the same as with an adult, an AED will analyse the information it receives from the pads and decide whether there is a heart rhythm; it can shock. If there is not, it will provide instructions about what to do next. If it does find a shockable rhythm, it will advise the user to take the next step in the process.
