Sunburn is painful because it affects the upper layers of the skin where many nerve endings are located.
Severe sunburn can cause:
• redness
• swelling
• blistering
• fever or feeling unwell
Large areas of blistering or signs of illness should be assessed by a medical professional.
In New Zealand UV levels are especially strong between September and April, particularly between 10am and 4pm.
Reduce risk using SunSmart protection:
Slip on clothing
Slop on sunscreen
Slap on a hat
Wrap on sunglasses
Seek shade.
