NZRC guidance highlights that:
- There is no strong evidence that elevating a limb alone stops bleeding.
- Elevation may increase pain or worsen an injury if done incorrectly.
Use a practical approach:
- Improve direct pressure — apply firm, continuous pressure directly over the bleeding site.
- Reduce harm and discomfort — support the injured area, minimise movement.
- Escalate early — if bleeding is not controlled or you are concerned, call 111 and continue direct pressure until help arrives.
Tomorrow we focus on getting help and using the injured person.
