Course Description

Provide Basic Life Support is the first module in either a basic first aid or an intermediate first aid course. It covers topics that include how to approach a medical emergency safely. The process of identifying hazards and ensuring the scene is safe for rescuers the people involved in the emergency and any bystanders that may be present. Provide Basic Life Support also looks at the positioning of an unconscious person, the procedure for calling the emergency services, the emergency assessment, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This module will also examine defibrillation and obstructive airway management in adults, children, and infants.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course the learner will be able to demonstrate;

  • Know to look for and identify any dangers resulting from environmental conditions
  • Assess collapsed persons according to the New Zealand Resuscitation Council Guidelines for Resuscitation.
  • Manage a collapsed person according to their condition
  • Be able to demonstrate the management of a foreign body airway obstruction according to the New Zealand Resuscitation Council Guidelines for Resuscitation.

Certification

This module is assessed by way of a formal practical assessment.  The assessments cover demonstrations of effective CPR in an adult, child, and infant. Please note that CPR assessments of the adult and child will require the person being assessed to demonstrate the techniques whilst kneeling on the floor. It also requires effective demonstrations of choking in a conscious adult, child, and infant. Upon successful completion of this unit standard, the learner will have demonstrated competence in unit standard 6402.
